Logan is Baby Benjamin's cousin from our previous post. Logan's Daddy is Paul's weekly coffee shop buddy (thus the coffee bean bag) and he teaches us from God's Word each Sunday in our Adult Bible Fellowship group at church. His mommy is a beautiful and kind woman inside and out (thus his adorableness)! We are thankful for both of their encouragement and friendship! Logan is born into a strong Iowa State family (thus the football outfit)! He has two adorable big sisters who love him like crazy (thus the monkey hat...he looks as cute as a sock monkey...no wonder they both want to hold him so much!). We are so thankful for his family and are excited to watch our little friend Logan grow!

Benjamin... a miracle!

It was a session in memory of Sam, "the little engine that could", the baby they had just lost after so many little miracles of his birth and his amazing fight with his congenital heart disorder. We all miss Sam and his short little life taught all those who love him and his family so much about God, hope & miracles, life & death, being empty & being filled, pain & grace, love... and so much more. God has done another amazing miracle once again in this family's life! Baby Benjamin is a miracle! We are pleased to present to you the joy of their new addition! We are overjoyed that Benjamin's heart tests have come back completely normal! What a blessing! Please continue to pray for this family as their son Matthew, shown holding Baby Benjamin below also has a congenital heart disorder and has undergone many difficult surgeries. The Lord God has been with this family every step of the way as they have depended on Him!

How 4Hisheart was born...

When a new baby is born with a heart defect, they stay in the NICU until their surgery. Sometimes that surgery is right away, sometimes days or weeks away. The NICU has perfected the art of caring for NEWborns. Everything is quiet and hushed. The lights are soft. Holding and kangaroo care (skin to skin holding) is encouraged whenever possible. The babies are swaddled and... laid on soft "sheepskin" blankets.

After surgery these same newborn babies are sent to the cardiac floor to recover and heal. The cardiac floor is not just for babies or children, but anyone of any age who has just had cardiac surgery. Most patients are adults. Some are children. But only about one a month is a NEWBORN baby. They receive top of the line-outstanding care there, but it is not an environment that has been designed with a newborn baby in mind. The lights are bright, the floor in general is loud. Voices are no longer hushed because it is not just babies anymore. It is harsh.

While our son Samuel was a patient, I really tried to advocate some of these things for him. (We also had the best nurses in the world which made it all happen!) We got a swaddler sent up from the NICU and then eventually purchased our own which worked great. Sam absolutely LOVED being swaddled. He always settled right in. He loved his little hands right next to his face, and often sucked on his tiny fist and fingers as he went to sleep. We also played soft music in his room. Beethoven was his favorite. It was on constant repeat in his room. One day not long after Sam's debut on the cardiac unit I saw a soft little stuffed lamb sitting on the nurses station desk. I noticed that it had buttons on one side. I pushed one and realized it had four of them for four "white noise" sounds to soothe babies. I asked if I could bring it into Sam's room. Nobody knew where it came from so it kind of became his. From that day on that little lamb was always in his Isolette-usually right next to him. The whale noise was the one he responded to almost every time. It settled him down when he would get upset.

While Sam was still in the hospital it became clear to me that there was a real need for little comforts like those for the newborn babies that come there. Comforts to help "soften" an otherwise harsh environment. It became even more clear that meeting those needs would not only help the cardiac babies, possibly speed recovery, and help them feel more secure, but also help minister to the parents of those babies. The cardiac unit of the hospital is a very scary place. It was beyond frightening with Matthew at ages 3, 5,and 7.

..being there with a newborn stole the very breath from our bodies.

1 in 100 babies are born with a congential heart defect.
1 in 100.
Most, will not live to see their first birthday.
Sam did not.

There is NO CURE or known cause for any of them.
The only treatment is neccessary life threatning surgey (ies) with multiple complications.
Both Sam and Matthew have endured these.
Matthew will live with this for the rest of his life.

1 in 100.
It is the NUMBER ONE cause of death in children.
NUMBER ONE.
It kills more children than ALL of the forms of childhood cancer-
COMBINED!!

After The Lord took our sweet little boy Home we knew we wanted to do something in his honor and memory. We knew we wanted to somehow minister to these babies and these parents...and even more importantly bring them closer to the heart of our Savior in the most difficult heartbreaking time of their lives.

We came up with something that we think will do both of those things. It is a ministry that exists because of our precious little Sam and his heart, and is in honor and memory of him...but it is also a ministry that exists because of our great and loving God who gave us Sam, and it is His heart that we want to draw nearer to.

So we want to introduce you to:

We have use money from donations to purchase comfort bags, and then send them to 2 different hopspital cardiac floors for newborns with heart defects. We also send them all over the country, and have sent a few internationally as well.

Bags big enough for parents to carry things to and from the hospital each day. In each bag there is a swaddler like the one that brought so much comfort and stability to our sweet little boy. There is a sheep just like the one that became his constant companion, and there is a devotional book which was one of my constant companions. It is a devotional book written specifically for parents of critically and chronically ill children. It clearly gives the plan of salvation and many, many wonderful testimonies of parents who like us were faced with the incredible pain of having a child whose life hangs in the balance. A gas card to help ever so slightly ease the financial burden incurred, a classical lullaby CD like the one that Sam loved so much...and a very special blanket specifically designed to fit the size of an isolette and without knoted edges to prevent sores from edema.

Samuel's story and his caringbridge page information will be on a card in every pocket of every bag. (ideally I would like to have a website just for the ministry...but I have NO idea how to make that happen right now.)

I want them to know the little boy and the story behind what they are given. Ultimately it is God's story...Samuel is just a vessel for that. Please pray for this ministry. Pray that God would use it and us for his honor and glory, and pray that it ministers to the hearts and lives of the patients and parents who are experiencing such shattering heartbreak. This ministry fills a real and vital NEED!!

We CANNOT do this without your help...this ministry would not exsist without God working through the hearts of people willing to generously give toward helping these babies and their families. Thank you SO much for praying about how you can help. We do not have the words to thank you.
